a tremendous storm

shook the earth

the spitting rain

loosening her grasp

on the sleeping child

the wind was strong

her love was stronger

determined and unafraid

she climbed the highest cliff

to look straight into the storm’s eye

she lifted her hand in defiance

and with the same power

that cradled the child

there emerged a silent flash

that tore through the rage of the storm

dissipating wind and clouds

until all that remained

was a tender mist

that left a soft kiss

on her child’s cheek
